They say there’s a first time for everything…
and today was my first time at Gyu-Kaku Windward Mall. We went in for an early dinner, just in time to catch the back end of happy hour. They offer 2 happy hours. First from 4-6pm, and again from 9pm to close.
After making a few selections, we ended up with a couple of different meats for the Yakiniku grill. Chuck Kalbi
and Yakishabu
They had a selection of different dipping sauces for the meats. A spicy garlic dipping sauce (which wasn’t actually spicy), ponzu, and some soy/viniger sauce.
We got the Mushroom Medley, Zucchini, Garlic Chicken Wings, and Ahi Poke. I never even got a chance to take photos of the poke, because it was gon almost as soon as it hit the tale. the fresh cuts of Ahi tuna were a perfect way to start the meal.
We fired up the Yakiniku grill and cooked up the meat, while snacking on the wings and veggies.
However, the real star of the show was the Kurobuta Pork. Starting next week, Gyu-Kaku Windward Mall will be rolling out a new menu with something like 8 new menu items. Including desserts (Keep an eye out for Wasabi Ice Cream). Tonight we got a special gift compliments of the chef. A sample of the Kurobuta Pork.
For those of you who are not familiar with Kurobuta (or Berkshire) Pork, its essentially to pork what Kobe is to beef. The juiciest, most tender, wonderfully marbled pork that practically melts into your mouth. Make a special trip down to Gyu Kaku Windward Mall next week to try it for yourself.
Look at all that marbling.
For dessert, something you never see in a restaurant. In fact, outside of a family camping trip, its not likely you can remember the last time you had them.
S’mores!
They give you 3 different chocolate options for your s’mores. Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and Cookies-n-Cream. Yeah, you read that right… Cookies-n-Cream. And before you ask, YES, it is as good as it sounds.
We roasted the marshmallows over the open flame of the yakiniku grill and put them together right there at the table. What in interesting experience. Never thought this is something I would ever do at a restaurant. But we did, and it was great.
We finished our S’mores, and wiped our sticky hands with the giant wetnaps they have on the tables. (such a great idea. all these other tiny wetnap companies need to get their act together.
So as soon as you get a chance next week, take a trip down to Gyu Kaku Windward Mall to check out their new menu. Hopefully during happy hour. Also, follow them on twitter at @GyukakuWindward to keep up with whats going on. I know I will definitely be back.
